Then, a stunning night with Professor Charles Esdaile who is a world expert on all things 'Napoleonic and Waterloo Battle' based as well as the 'Peninsular War', he will give an interactive presentation about a key campaign the 'Battle of Burgos' on Thursday 20th September at the Pool at 7.30pm. Just £5 a ticket.
On 19 September 1812 in the midst of the Peninsular War the army of the Duke of Wellington closed in on 2,000 French troops holding the fortress of Burgos. There followed a month of bitter fighting, but, despite repeated assaults, the defenders held firm. It was a humiliating failure, and one that had serious consequences. In this talk listeners will be treated to an in-depth analysis of the disaster. Was it, as Wellington claimed, the fault of his soldiers? Or was it rather the result of faults committed by Wellington himself, faults that his admirers have ever afterwards sought to hide? But this will not just be a history lesson. Instead, the audience will also learn of the rediscovery of the fortress by a small group of British researchers and their attempts to chart the remains and open them up as a heritage site.
Then we will finally sort the 'Magic Night'probably the first Thurday in October...bear with us!
